Short Stories - Literary Devises Title:__

Point of View:
This story is told from a narrators point of view. The POV in this story is limited-omniscient.

Protagonist:
The protagonist is Urlich von Gradwitz

What type of character is the Protagonist?
Round and Dynamic.

Antagonist:
The Antagonist is Georg Znaeym.

Describe the setting
The setting is in a stormy forest. In my opinion, the feel of the setting is chaotic and soon becomes slightly desperate.

Type of Conflict:
The conflict is between Urlich and Georg, and the environment. The conflict is external.

Describe the main conflict:
The main conflict occurs when Urlich and Georg get stuck under the tree, and begin threatening each other.

Describe the Climax of the Story:
In my opinion, there are two main high points in the story. One of the is when Urlich and Georg get stuck in the branch. After this point, the main conflict is resolved, until the wolves find them.
I think that the part when Urlich and Georg get stuck under the branch is the climax, because after this point, no new information is presented about the characters.

How does the Protagonist change over the course of the story?

At the beginning of the story, the protaganist is very bitter towards Georg’s family. I was under the impression that he was thinking in a pessimistic way about everything that was going on in his life. At then end of the story, he befriends Georg, and begins to have a more optimistic view on life.

Describe the relationship between the title and the theme.
The word “Interloper” means a person who becomes involved in a place or situation where they are not wanted. I think the title of this story is related to the theme, because both the protagonist and the antagonist are involved in a situation created by their grandparents, where neither of them is accepted or liked by the other.

In my opinion the theme of this story is acceptance, because Georg and Ulrich have to both learn to accept each other despite the conflict between their families.

How does the main conflict help to illustrate the theme?

During the main conflict, neither of the characters is accepted by the other character, and both characters do not like each other. During the main conflict, the characters learn not to hate each other just because their families did, and they become more accepting of each other. They also become more accepting of their situation after they accept each other.

How does the climax help to illustrate the theme?

Give examples of each of the following literary terms in the story (use quotes):

Simile:
Pg. 192 paragraph 2 “But what a Heaven-sent draught it seemed!”
The wine seemed to be a Heaven sent draught.

Metaphor:
At the beginning of the story, Urlich compares Georg to his prey.
Pg 189, paragraph 1
I could not add a quote to back this up, because there are more than one sentences when he makes the reference.

Personification:
Pg. 190: “A fierce shriek of the storm…”
This is a personification, because it is saying that a storm can scream.

Symbol:
I think the tree is a symbol of a mediator because it forces the two characters to work out their problems and become more accepting of each other.

Foreshadowing (give both elements):

In the first paragraph on the second page, the author states; “Assuredly there was a disturbing element in the forest, and Ulrich could guess the quarter from whence it came”. This is an example of foreshadowing because later in the story, something very disturbing happens.

Irony:

In my opinion, it’s ironic that before the climax of the story, Urlich and Georg want to kill each other, but after they befriend each other and no longer want to kill each other, their lives are put in danger.

Imagery:

At the end of the third paragraph on page 190, there are many examples or Imagery when the branches fell on Georg and Urlich .
“The decending twigs had slashed the skin of his face, and he had to wink away some drops of blood from his eyelashes…”
“All round him lay a thick-strewn wreckage of splintered branches and broken twigs”

Describe the relationships between the class theme and the story.

The class theme is choices, and the story theme is acceptance. Although it might not seem evident at first, choices and acceptance are very closely related in this story. Urlich made the hard, unexpected choice to become more accepting of Greog, and Greorg made the difficult choice to agree to become Urlich’s friends, after many years of being sworn enemies. This decision alters everything in the story, and is a perfect example of how the choices one makes can alter one’s situation.

3. Why do Ulrich and Georg hate each other? How did it all start?
A fight between Ulrich's family and Goerg's family become a personal fight between Georg and Ulrich. Georg also snatched game from Ulrich's property.

4. Identify the foreshadowing in the second paragraph.
At the end of the second paragraph, the author states; "Assuredly, there was a disturbing element in the forest, and Ulrich could guess the qarter from whence it came." This is foreshadowing that something disturbing will happen later in the story.

5. Why did they not try to shoot each other the moment they saw each other?
Because both had been brought up under the code of a restraining, and it is not considered right to shoot your enemy in cold bood.

6. What saves Ulrich’s feet from being crushed?
Urlich's heavy shooting boots saved his feet from being crushed.

Both of the men tell each other that they have friends who are on their way to find, and release them, when neither one does.

8. Why does Ulrich change his mind about killing Georg?
Because he realized that their whole life, they have been fighting pettily, and he has realized that they have been foolish. He realizes that there are more important things than his forest, and he decides he wants to become friends with Georg.

9. What significance is there in the title of this story? What are some possible meanings of the title?
An interloper is a person who is not accepted in situation. The title could could refer to the fact that neither Urlich's family or Georg's family accepted each other.

Each man hopes that their friends will rescue them first, because they want to show off the fact that they had become friends.

11. Describe the irony in this story.
Before they get stuck under the tree, Ulrich and Georg were about to kill each other because they aren't accepting of each other. At the end of the story, they learn to accept each other, but wolves come, and it is implied that they are dangerous wolves. This is irony, because after the two characters decide they do not want to kill each other, they are placed in a dangerous situation where there is a change they will be killed. This is situational irony.

12. What metaphor can you find in relation to the tree pinning down the two characters?
The tree that pinned down the two characters could be a metaphor for a mediator, where neither character can hurt each other, and they are forced to sort out their problems.

13. Is the ending of this story effective? Why or why not?=====
I think the ending of the story is effective because it shows how the two new friends will have their first challenge as friends because of something they cause while hating each other. In my opinion it was a very clever ending!

QUESTION I FORGOT ON THE LITERARY DEVISES DOCUMENT:

How does the climax help to illustrate the theme?
During the cimax, Georg and Ulrich learn to become more accepting of each other. They agree to become friends, and this decision takes a lot of courage to make, because their families are so used to fighting all the time.
The theme of this story of acceptance, and the climax illustrates this theme very well, because during the climax, Ulrich and Georg make a decision for themselves, and become more accepting of each other.
